One person was killed in a direct collision with an FDNY firefighter who drove the wrong way on the highway, according to New York City police. The accident happened at about 7:30 p.m. on November 20.

Thirty-eight-year-old NYFD firefighter Joseph Norris, who was off-duty, crashed into a 2007 Mazda CX7, killing another driver Anthony Mariano, 44, a beloved Queens public high school teacher. Norris was going the wrong way down Sunken Meadow Parkway near Smithtown when the accident happened near the exit SM3. Norris, from Babylon, was operating a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.

Mariano was a social studies teacher for 17 years at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside. He was about to marry his girlfriend of 10 years, but they had delayed the wedding for next summer, because of the pandemic.

The first responders found Mariano dead at the scene. They transported Norris to Southside Hospital in Bayshore in critical condition. According to sources, Norris may lose both his legs because of the severe injuries.

If you were injured in a car accident (even as a passenger) you should seek legal help. No matter how severe or mild your injuries were, never refuse to take medical help. Afterward, consult with a New York car accident attorney.

All the legal labyrinth may be too much for a car accident victim. Focus on your healing and allow your lawyer to gather the evidence and help you file the claim. New York is a “nofault” insurance state. This means that the insured person will be compensated by their insurance company for damages, no matter who was responsible for the crash.

Our New York car accident lawyers will review your case and advise you on the next steps. Contact us and schedule your first consultation free of charge.
