High Levels of Benzene Found in Some Spray Deodorants & Antiperspirants

Recent testing by Valisure LLC, an independent testing facility, identified high levels of the known carcinogen benzene in 44 of 86 distinct products from 30 brands of spray deodorants and antiperspirants. This finding comes shortly after benzene was detected in several Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreen products.

Although the source of benzene remains unknown, it may result from how a particular ingredient in the aerosol products was manufactured, sourced, or how the product moved through the supply chain. It is speculated that the benzene most likely arose through ingredients such as butane, isobutane, or propane – all of which serve as propellants in spray products.

Benzene is known to cause several types of cancer including leukemia and other blood cell cancers. Benzene is also linked to skin irritation and dermatitis which is of particular concern since these products are meant to be regularly applied to the skin during normal use.

Following testing, Valisure has called for a recall of all affected products and is requesting that the FDA set better-defined limits for benzene contamination in drug and cosmetic products.

Products tested include those from the following brands:

  • Arrid
  • Axe
  • Azzaro
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Brut
  • Calvin Klein
  • Davidoff
  • Degree
  • Designer Imports
  • Dove

Testimonials

  • I highly recommend Cellino Law to anyone involved in a car crash. I worked with Michael Lovecchio, and had a wonderful experience given the circumstances. He was very attentive, and got the best possible outcome I could have wanted.

  • Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. I am very pleased (and surprised) at the amount of the settlement. We will use the funds to help pay down the debt on the truck we had to purchase after ours was totaled. Thank you again.

  • I really just wanted to say thank you so much for taking my case, answering all my questions, and mostly for being very patient with me. I feel that without you and Roza I would not have been able to get anything at all. I hope to never need a lawyer again, but if I do I will definitely want you both working for me. Again thank your for you hard work, time and patience.

  • I am writing this letter to say how much I appreciate your services pertaining to my case. Your injury attorney took a hands-on approach and left me fully informed at all times as to where my case was going as well as how much ground we had to cover; leaving the final decisions in my hands but making sure that I knew all of the risks involved in the choices. I have dealt with a few law firms in my life on various different cases and this is the first time that I never had to call and/or track down my lawyer… because of this, I have and will continue to recommend Cellino Law to my friends and associates.

  • Joe and I just wanted to send you this note thanking you for the professional way you handled our lawsuit. Your kindness was extremely appreciated in a very difficult time. When we found out the people that caused the accident had no insurance, we thought our chances of receiving any settlement was nonexistent. Once we met with you and released you were able to help us our minds were put at ease. Your aggressive manner of handling the case exceeded our expectations. Please feel free to use us as a reference. Thank you so much and best wishes,

    Danielle and Joe
