What Are The Most Dangerous Intersections in Western New York?

Driving in Western New York presents its fair share of challenges, from unpredictable weather to congested roadways during rush hour. However, some intersections are particularly prone to accidents. The following intersections across WNY stand out for the number of collisions that occur, making them especially dangerous for drivers.

If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident, contacting an experienced attorney can help you navigate the process and get the support needed to recover.

The Five Corners – Orchard Park

The intersection of Lake Avenue, Southwestern Boulevard, and Orchard Park Road, commonly referred to as “The Five Corners”, is known for constant traffic flow, making it a hot spot for accidents.  It can be a dangerous intersection for drivers because:

  • Multiple roads intersect at odd angles, making traffic patterns hard to follow
  • Congestion builds up fast, especially during rush hours
  • Drivers unfamiliar with the area often hesitate or make last-minute decisions
  • Limited visibility can cause difficulty for turning vehicles

The layout and constant congestion of this intersection cause accidents frequently. Drivers should use caution when approaching this intersection and be wary of vehicles stopping short or accelerating through yellow lights. Due to the number of accidents that occur here, many have called for this intersection to be replaced by a roundabout

Niagara Falls Boulevard and Maple Road – Amherst

Located in one of the busiest areas of Amherst, this intersection sits in the middle of shopping plazas, restaurants, and daily foot traffic. The constant activity in this area creates several challenges for drivers and pedestrians, including:

  • Constant stop-and-go traffic
  • Sudden stops and unpredictable turns into plaza parking lots
  • A higher risk of rear-end and side-impact collisions

Quick changes to traffic patterns and heavy flow of vehicles in this area make pedestrian safety a concern. Drivers approaching this intersection should be wary of vehicles entering and exiting traffic from one of the many shopping destinations near the intersection, and those entering and exiting parking lots should be wary of oncoming traffic and pedestrians passing through.

Transit Road and Maple/Greiner Road – Williamsville

Transit Road is often thought of as one of the Northtown’s busiest roadways, and the intersection of Transit and Griener is a great example of this. The combination of traffic surges from Transit and Griener is a recipe for accidents. Common causes of accidents here include:

  • Aggressive driving, including tailgating, quick lane changes, and speeding
  • Unprotected left turns
  • Heavy traffic that makes it difficult to navigate the roads safely

Because of the low visibility and heavy traffic flow in this area, rear-end accidents and side-swipes are common occurrences. Drivers should be extra cautious when approaching the intersection, entering or exiting turning lanes, and double-checking blind spots.

Union Road and Williams Street – Cheektowaga

If you’re driving through this area during rush hour, you’re probably familiar with this intersection’s reputation for traffic jams and fatal accidents throughout the years. In this area, drivers may deal with:

  • Bumper-to-bumper congestion
  • Limited visibility, especially when turning
  • A high number of accidents that result in injuries

Due to the number of accidents that occur at this intersection, drivers are urged to practice defensive driving. Giving yourself enough space between you and the car in front of you, using turn signals, and exercising caution while approaching the traffic signal can help prevent a serious accident.

Southwestern Boulevard and McKinley Parkway – Hamburg/Blasdell

Besides Five Corners, the intersection at Southwestern Boulevard and McKinley Parkway is easily one of the most dangerous intersections in the Southtowns. Previously known as the Seven Corners intersection before reconstruction, this intersection is known for one thing in particular–a left-turn arrow that barely gives drivers enough time to get through. Drivers in this area may experience:

  • Other drivers rushing to beat the red light
  • Frequent car crashes
  • A constant flow of local and commuter traffic

With limited time to make a safe turn and the added pressure from constant traffic, this intersection remains a common site for accidents. Always use caution when approaching the intersection here, and be aware of seemingly quick light changes.

How a Personal Injury Attorney Can Help After an Accident

Accidents at busy intersections often lead to serious injuries, unexpected medical expenses, and stress. If someone else caused your accident, having a personal injury attorney on your side can make all the difference in these situations.

At Cellino Law, we help people navigate the personal injury claims process and fight for the compensation they deserve. Here’s how our personal injury attorneys can help you:

Evaluate Your Case

We offer free case evaluations to help you understand your legal rights after an accident. During your case evaluation, our legal team will take the time to learn what happened, review any details you’ve gathered from the accident, and answer any questions you may have about the legal process.

Gather Strong Evidence

Your attorney will work to collect evidence from the accident, including police reports, traffic camera footage, medical records, and witness statements. This evidence helps us show who was at fault and how the accident has affected your life.

Communicate With the Insurance Companies

Insurance companies rarely offer a fair settlement upfront. Your attorney will handle all the communication with the insurance companies, advocate on your behalf, and negotiate for the full compensation you deserve.

Represent You At Trial

Most cases settle before trial, but if the insurance company won’t offer a fair amount, we’re prepared to take your case to court. Our attorneys are experienced trial lawyers who know how to present a strong case and fight for the outcome you deserve.

Support and Guide You

We’ll keep you informed and involved throughout your case. If you have questions, need help with paperwork, or want to know what to expect next, we’re here to provide clear guidance and support.

Testimonials

  • I am writing this letter to say how much I appreciate your services pertaining to my case. Your injury attorney took a hands-on approach and left me fully informed at all times as to where my case was going as well as how much ground we had to cover; leaving the final decisions in my hands but making sure that I knew all of the risks involved in the choices. I have dealt with a few law firms in my life on various different cases and this is the first time that I never had to call and/or track down my lawyer… because of this, I have and will continue to recommend Cellino Law to my friends and associates.

    Denise

  • I highly recommend Cellino Law to anyone involved in a car crash. I worked with Michael Lovecchio, and had a wonderful experience given the circumstances. He was very attentive, and got the best possible outcome I could have wanted.

    Susan

  • Thank you for all your help. It has been a long journey. At last, the light at the end of the tunnel. Also, thank Tom for the help and work he put in.

    Ron

  • My experience during the time of negotiations was extremely positive. Josh Sandberg handled my lawsuit with the utmost integrity. He returned all my phone calls in a timely manner and answered all my questions. Josh made things less stressful. I would highly recommend Josh and the entire staff at Cellino Law.

    Arthur

  • Cellino Law and more specifically my attorney, Gregory V. Pajak, Managing Attorney, and as a whole the Cellino Law Firm and its organization. This is by far one of the most professional law firms and attorney I have ever engaged with and retained in my 35 years. The level of professionalism goes beyond words, the care and constant engagement with me as the client was touching. I was never ever just treated as simply a CASE with potentially a significant dollar number attached to my file. I was engaged regularly, Tracey (Ass’t) and Greg always made sure to remain constant, as well as consistent in overseeing that my case was handled properly and that it did matter in many ways - ensuring that the end result(s) would be fair and reasonable to my case/injury. The regular follow-up calls were very satisfying, knowing that you’re involved in your case matters significantly AND always. One of my main items to recognize Cellino Law and Gregory is that whenever I called, I was able to get through to speak directly to my Lawyer and he would answer any if not all of my questions in a very professional and genuinely caring manner. I always felt cared for and protected legally and more importantly, I was made feel as a human being that was being cared for and always keeping me abreast of all matters connected to the case. There was never a point I felt let down, on the contrary -the level of service was “STELLAR”. Greg is the consummate professional, a ‘role model’, if you will, for what other attorneys should strive to become when dealing with their clients.
