What Is Aggressive Driving?

Aggressive driving is the act of operating a vehicle in a way that puts oneself or other people at risk. It often means deliberately breaking traffic laws or driving with anger and frustration. This kind of driving can include speeding, tailgating, weaving through traffic, or ignoring traffic signals — all which increase the chance of serious crashes and injuries. Recognizing these behaviors early can help you stay safe on the road.

Signs of an Aggressive Driver

While behind the wheel, recognizing an aggressive driver and practicing defensive driving can help to avoid an accident. Common tactics used by aggressive drivers can include the following:

Speeding

Aggressive drivers will often drive faster than the speed limit. They may speed up suddenly to pass other cars or rush through yellow lights to avoid stopping. Driving too fast makes it harder to react to traffic and road conditions.

Tailgating

Tailgating is when a driver follows another vehicle too closely. It’s a tactic commonly used to make the driver in front feel pressured to either speed up or change lanes. This behavior is dangerous because there will not be enough space for the tailgating driver to brake in time if traffic slows down or comes to a sudden stop, leading to a rear-end collision.

Frequent Lane Changes

Aggressive drivers often weave between lanes erratically and without any indication of them doing so. They may weave through traffic to try to get ahead, usually without using turn signals or checking their blind spots. This kind of driving can startle other drivers and increase the risk of a crash.

Running Red Lights or Stop Signs

Some drivers ignore stop signs or traffic lights to save time or because they’re impatient. This behavior is extremely dangerous and puts other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians at risk. Running a red light is one of the top causes of serious crashes at intersections.

Blocking Other Drivers

Aggressive drivers may intentionally prevent other vehicles from merging or changing lanes. This type of behavior increases tension on the road and can quickly escalate into dangerous situations. It disrupts the flow of traffic and increases the risk of a crash.

Aggressive Reactions to Other Drivers

Excessive horn use, yelling out the window, or making rude hand gestures are all forms of aggressive driving. Whether it’s laying on the horn or shaking a fist, these actions distract others, create confusion, and can quickly escalate tensions on the road. This behavior increases the risk of dangerous confrontations and serious accidents.

Why Do Some Drivers Become Aggressive?

Aggressive drivers may let emotions or bad habits influence how they behave on the road, putting others at risk. Several reasons can lead to aggressive driving:

  • Feeling rushed or running late
  • Stress from work or personal life
  • Anger or frustration with other drivers
  • Habit or a competitive driving style
  • Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Understanding why aggressive drivers act the way they do doesn’t excuse their behavior, but it helps explain the risks they pose.

What to Do If You Encounter an Aggressive Driver

If you see an aggressive driver, try to stay calm. Use these tips to protect yourself and others on the road:

  • Avoid Eye Contact: Looking directly at an aggressive driver can sometimes make the situation worse.
  • Don’t Respond to Aggression: Avoid gestures, yelling, or making angry faces back. Stay focused on your own driving.
  • Give Them Space: If someone is tailgating or driving too close, safely change lanes or slow down to create distance.
  • Don’t Block Their Way: Let aggressive drivers pass if possible. Trying to block or race them can escalate the situation.
  • Report Dangerous Driving: If you see a driver putting others at risk, note their license plate and location and report it to the police when it’s safe to do so.
  • Keep Your Doors Locked and Windows Up: This adds a layer of safety in case the aggressive driver tries to approach your car.

  • Choosing the right attorney to represent you after an accident can make all the difference. This is no cliche. I recently experienced these words to live by first hand. After a tractor trailer rear ended me at high speed in 2017 I retained Allan Silverstein to handle my case. I quickly realized that bringing a lawsuit rapidly snowballs into a mountain of details that can make or break your results. Documents, case histories, doctor visits, bills, and lots of phone calls all need to be accurately kept track of if a successful outcome it to be attained. To complicate matters I reside in New York and the incident took place in New Jersey. Luckily, Allan was licensed in multiple states. I was fortunate to find Allan to handle this matter from the New York area. Armed with an accurate account of the facts Allan went to work on the difficult job of negotiating with the defending insurance company as well as my no fault carrier in order to obtain the best possible outcome for my set of circumstances. In a lawsuit communication is key and and events can be of a timely nature. Allan never failed to return my calls - usually the same day! He fought skillfully and respectfully to get me the best possible settlement. He is easy to deal with and a likeable down to earth guy. He always listened with compassion and respect to my issues. He guided me with objective understanding as well as a realistic analysis of the merits of my case. When we finally settled Allan got me a fair agreement beyond my expectations and negotiated with my doctors to make sure all my bills were paid. It was a great experience having Allan represent me. Quality work in any aspect of life is hard to find. Quality is what I got with Allan Silverstein. I highly recommend him if you find yourself in need of a personal injury attorney.
