Edgewell Personal Care Company, manufacturer of the popular Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray, recalled multiple batches of their SPF 30 product after finding trace amounts of benzene, which is classified as a human carcinogen.
According to Edgwell’s press release, the recall affects various batches of the sunscreen which is packaged in aerosol cans. Their statement claims that benzene is not an ingredient used in the production of Banana Boat products and blames the propellant for containing the benzene. The propellant distributes the sunscreen itself from the aerosol can onto the skin.
The recalled batches were distributed across the United States and have expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023, and April 2024. If consumers have products with the listed expiration dates and have lot codes 20016AF, 20084BF, and 21139AF, Edgewell recommends that they stop using and dispose of the product immediately.
