Traffic was slowed for several hours after a New York man died in a tractor-trailer crash on the night of October 12 on Interstate 80 near Bellefonte.

Sometime around 6:30 p.m., the driver of the first vehicle, a 2018 Kenworth W900, was going northbound on Interstate 99 and joined the Interstate 80 east on-ramp, state police at Rockview said. As the driver settled the curve, the load in his trailer moved, which made the vehicle to overturn on I-80 eastbound, the police said.

Thirty-five-year-old Jose Chirinos Ortega, from Bay Shore, New York was driving a 1999 International Harvester 9800 on I-80 eastbound and hit the overturned tractor-trailer. Chirinos Ortega was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene, the police informed.

According to state police, the driver of the first vehicle didn’t have any injuries. I-80 eastbound was closed (between exits 161 and 173) for almost twelve hours. The accident is still under investigation, the police say.

State police got help at the scene from Bellefonte EMS, Mount Nittany Paramedics, the Logan Fire Company, Undine Fire Company, Centre County Emergency Management, PennDOT, and Eagle Towing.

Losing a loved one in an accident is never easy. But, you should know you have the right to file a lawsuit and seek a compensation claim.

Every case is different so your auto accident attorney will determine yours; you can collect the claim and cover funeral and hospital expenses.

These types of claims are never easy and it’s best if you file them with the help of a lawyer. Trying to do this on your own may cost you a lower settlement since insurance companies have their ways of calculating these things. Your lawyer won’t let things like this happen and they’ll negotiate until you get your deserved claim.
